Newhailes Glasshouses, Musselburgh

Restoration of a historic Victorian glasshouse in the grounds of the Newhailes Estate. The window opening mechanism no longer worked and recent storm damage had resulted in the partial collapse of the rear wall. Detailed survey work established how the frame was constructed and the decay state of the timber. Elements were recorded before the frame was carefully dismantled. The frame was reassembled, re-using salvaged materials where possible. Timber elements were repaired using traditional scarf joints or replaced in full where practical and new glazing was installed throughout.
